Description & Application:
Natural kiln dried black sand for modelling and crafts. The sand will not stain hands, fabrics or paintwork, it is also colourfast and suitable for use underwater. Wash before use.
Crafters have used this sand to impart a black �fleck� into their creations. Utilising our granite sand ( Ref 3124) the effect of adding 5% , 10% and 20% black sand is demonstrated by the additional product image.
Scale Models:
It is difficult to absolutely scale natural sands. To model beach, volcanic or desert sand at HO scale requires a grain size similar to clay minerals at around five microns.
Considering both availability and convenience for working, the finest grain size of modelling sand is in a size range of 0.1 to 0.3mm ( 100 to 300 microns).
Top Tip:
When attempting to scale a sandy surface use both the finest sand available, and a uniformly coloured sand, for instance our Volcanic Black Sand, in order for it not to look grainy. A through graded sand with different coloured grains like our "concrete jungle" will provide a more rugged appearance.
